Poetry Class
4 Wednesdays
June 6th – 27th
1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Room 202

Participants will read and discuss a few poems on handout sheets for each session. Then, beginning with the second session, each participant will write a poem on a given theme or idea, and share it with the class. The instructor will provide some guidelines for writing poetry, mentioning characteristics of good poems, with examples to show those characteristics. So the class is one for reading poetry as well as writing it.

David Allan Evans, poet laureate of South Dakota, has had eight books of poems published, and several books of prose. Hundreds of his poems have been published in magazines and anthologies. His poem, “Pole Vaulter,” will be included in a celebration of sports poetry for the 2012 London Olympics. He was a professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at SDSU for 39 years, where he taught writing and literature courses, specializing in creative writing. In 2009 he received the Governor’s Award for Creative Achievement in the Arts.
